When it comes to making a strong first impression, your presence speaks before you even say a word. On October 29, 2025, students gathered in the Axinn Center for a workshop on “Professional Presence: Best Practices for Distinguishing Yourself,” led by Stephanie Coughlan P’28, founder and president of Image Intelligence.

With more than 25 years of experience in fashion, media, and branding – including roles with Vogue, Architectural Digest, Glamour, and GQ – Stephanie brought insider knowledge to help students align their outward image with their personal and professional goals.

During the workshop, she shared how subtle choices, like color, fabric, and fit, can shape the way others perceive you, and how “strategic dressing” is really about confidence, not conformity. The evening was followed by one-on-one sessions the next morning, where students received personalized guidance from Stephanie herself.

And the best part? Stephanie generously offered to share her favorite takeaways and resources so that everyone can benefit from her expertise.

Four Elements of Professional Presence

Stephanie’s framework for presence goes beyond clothing. It’s about intention, awareness, and alignment:

  • Clothing – How your wardrobe communicates confidence, competence, and authenticity.
  • Communication – Tone, body language, and the subtle power of eye contact.
  • Conduct – Small behaviors that signal professionalism (like being on time, following up, and keeping your phone off the table).
  • Confidence – The foundation of presence; believing in yourself and showing up with purpose.

The Emotional Impact of Color

Colors carry meaning. Here’s a snapshot of what your palette might be saying:

  • Black: Powerful, sophisticated, assertive
  • Navy: Trustworthy, calm, organized
  • Green: Refreshing, balanced, natural
  • Gray: Elegant, reliable, composed
  • Red: Dynamic, bold, energetic
  • Pink: Warm, compassionate, kind
  • Tan: Approachable, elegant, trusting

Use color intentionally. Wear what makes you feel most you.

Building a Foundational Wardrobe for Every Body

Stephanie’s advice: focus on versatile, timeless pieces that fit you – your shape, your comfort, and your style expression. Below is an inclusive list of anchor pieces and mix-and-match staples to help you create a wardrobe that works across industries.

Core Anchor Pieces

  • A well-fitted blazer or structured jacket
  • Tailored trousers or chinos
  • A versatile dress, jumpsuit, or matching set
  • Crisp button-down or structured top
  • Quality shoes in a neutral tone
  • A layering piece (cardigan, vest, or light jacket)

Mix & Match Staples

  • Knit tops, turtlenecks, or polos
  • Dark jeans or dress slacks
  • Midi or pencil skirt, or relaxed fit slacks
  • Statement accessories (watch, scarf, jewelry, tie, pin, or pocket square)
  • Professional bag, or tote

Key Accessories

  • Clean, polished shoes
  • A belt or accessory that adds structure or contract
  • Subtle personal details that reflect your individuality (earrings, patterned socks)

Pro tip: Clothing has no gender. Style is self-expression. Your personal image should feel authentic to who you are.

Subtle Practices for Standing Out

Stephanie’s list of small habits that make a big impact:

  • Follow up promptly after meetings
  • Be on time, and prepared
  • Listen before you speak
  • Say “My pleasure” instead of “No problem”
  • Handwrite thank-you notes
  • Let others exit before you enter
  • Keep your phone off the table
  • Match your socks (and your energy) to your outfit

Final Thoughts

“Improving your image isn’t about vanity, it’s about alignment,” Stephanie said. “When your outer presentation reflects your inner goals, you show up with confidence and authenticity.”

Remember your presence is your power.
