Limiting the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 is essential to protecting our community. Middlebury’s strategy is multilayered and uses the “Swiss cheese model” of pandemic defense. Imagine each layer of protection against the virus as a slice of Swiss cheese. While each layer is imperfect with holes that can allow the virus to pass through, multiple layers combined—vaccination, daily health checks, face coverings, physical distancing, frequent handwashing, COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, quarantine and isolation, building ventilation, and visitor and travel restrictions—significantly reduce the chances of transmission.

This section describes the essential health and safety measures that each member of the campus community has a responsibility to follow to protect themselves and others.
