    With new solar field, Vermont college gets closer to 100% renewable energy

    October 13, 2021

    A 30-acre parcel in Middlebury will soon be home to 29,000 solar panels built on trackers that are able to follow the movement of the sun. The panels will provide roughly a third of the electricity needs of the Middlebury College campus, the school said.

    State legislators, energy companies, local representatives and educators broke ground on a 5-MW solar project in Middlebury, Vermont on Tuesday. Upon completion, the solar array will supply Middlebury College with 30% of its electricity.

    Middlebury voted to divest. Now what?

    After a decade-long crusade of student activism, Middlebury has begun its long march toward divestment. In a unanimous decision last January, the Board of Trustees approved Energy 2028—an ambitious and sweeping plan that promises certain reductions of the college’s environmental footprint in response to the mounting climate crisis. With the vote, the board set a timeline for meeting a series of environmentally-minded goals and initiatives.
