Ballet returns to the Dance Department this Fall. Classical Ballet technique in traditional ballet class structure. No pointe shoes, please. PE credit is available for attendance at 8 classes. Previous dance experience in any form is recommended.

The students in JAPN 290 (“Reading the Tale of Genji” in English”) and Prof. Otilia Milutin (Japanese Studies) are cordially inviting you and your students to view their exhibit, “Living with Genji: The World’s First Novel in 21st Century Japan.” The exhibit features a selection of objects, artwork, movies, and manga inspired by the 11th century classic The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu.  Our exhibit aims to showcase a few selected items that speak both of the tale’s enduring legacy in traditional Japanese arts, and, equally important, of its contemporary reiterations, be they manga and movies adaptations or commercial, consumer-oriented products such as mascots, stationary, fabrics, and other everyday objects.  Through our exhibit, we hope to demonstrate how a millennium old classic lives and thrives today in contemporary Japan.

Beyond the Page theatre artists Craig Maravich and Madison Middleton offer an original theatrical experience inspired by the Museum’s current exhibition. This immersive event blends storytelling, music, and audience conversation to explore themes of memory, art-making, and humanity in an increasingly technological world.

Justin O’Rourke creates steel sculptures and large-scale, object-based drawings. His practice draws upon inspiration from childhood experiences exploring the industrial ruins of West Rutland, Vermont, and adventures as a hydroelectric mechanic. These, along with observations of nature and a playful, imaginative vision, are the foundation for his unique voice. O’Rourke manipulates and varies scale, an intentional device used to incite viewer response.

In a program comprised of vocal and cello repertoire, Chelsea Robinson’s senior concert examines the gendered experience of classical music in the private and public spheres. The program features works by Purcell, Brahms, Bosmans, Price, Casarrubios, and more, and is accompanied by Matthew Quayle. This concert is sponsored by the Middlebury College Music Department.

Join us in making flower headpieces that are traditionally used for Mexican folk dance performances. This will be a great opportunity to meet people from various backgrounds and create community. Join us for our Friends of the Art Museum Annual gathering as well as presentation talks by the Museum’s MAP students as well as our Sabarsky Graduate Fellow, Eloise McFarlane. 

Tierra del Sol is a community-based ballet folklorico whose aim is to preserve, present, and promote Mexican cultural heritage through traditional dance and music. They will share the rich beauty and diversity of the dances, history, and costumes of Mexico in this matinee event, alongside Middlebury dancers. This performance is the culminating event of their current Rothrock Residency working with Middlebury students. 

Free. No tickets required. Approximate running time: 75 minutes with a 10 minute intermission. A Q&A with the artists will follow the performance.
