Davis Family Library, Upper Level Display Cases

The students in JAPN 290 (“Reading the Tale of Genji” in English”) and Prof. Otilia Milutin (Japanese Studies) are cordially inviting you and your students to view their exhibit, “Living with Genji: The World’s First Novel in 21st Century Japan.” The exhibit features a selection of objects, artwork, movies, and manga inspired by the 11th century classic The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu.  Our exhibit aims to showcase a few selected items that speak both of the tale’s enduring legacy in traditional Japanese arts, and, equally important, of its contemporary reiterations, be they manga and movies adaptations or commercial, consumer-oriented products such as mascots, stationary, fabrics, and other everyday objects.  Through our exhibit, we hope to demonstrate how a millennium old classic lives and thrives today in contemporary Japan. 

This multimedia and multisensorial presentation is in the African and African Diaspora tradition of “call and response” — with images, sounds, film, and movement. We will consider Sensiotics, an approach that centers the crucial importance of the senses, our body-minds and sense-abilities, in our experiences with arts, cultures, and histories. While I focus on the arts of Yoru`ba´-speaking people of West Africa, I believe Sensiotics has global implications. FREE

on a journey of dances
from the African diaspora.

musicians to help participants

Ballet returns to the Dance Department this Fall. Classical Ballet technique in traditional ballet class structure. No pointe shoes, please. PE credit is available for attendance at 8 classes. Previous dance experience in any form is recommended.

Beyond the Page theatre artists Craig Maravich and Madison Middleton offer an original theatrical experience inspired by the Museum’s current exhibition. This immersive event blends storytelling, music, and audience conversation to explore themes of memory, art-making, and humanity in an increasingly technological world.

Justin O’Rourke creates steel sculptures and large-scale, object-based drawings. His practice draws upon inspiration from childhood experiences exploring the industrial ruins of West Rutland, Vermont, and adventures as a hydroelectric mechanic. These, along with observations of nature and a playful, imaginative vision, are the foundation for his unique voice. O’Rourke manipulates and varies scale, an intentional device used to incite viewer response.

Tierra del Sol is a community-based ballet folklorico whose aim is to preserve, present, and promote Mexican cultural heritage through traditional dance and music. They will share the rich beauty and diversity of the dances, history, and costumes of Mexico in this matinee event, alongside Middlebury dancers. This performance is the culminating event of their current Rothrock Residency working with Middlebury students. 

Free. No tickets required. Approximate running time: 75 minutes, no intermission. A Q&A with the artists will follow the performance.
