Davis Family Library, Upper Level Display Cases

The students in JAPN 290 (“Reading the Tale of Genji” in English”) and Prof. Otilia Milutin (Japanese Studies) are cordially inviting you and your students to view their exhibit, “Living with Genji: The World’s First Novel in 21st Century Japan.” The exhibit features a selection of objects, artwork, movies, and manga inspired by the 11th century classic The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu.  Our exhibit aims to showcase a few selected items that speak both of the tale’s enduring legacy in traditional Japanese arts, and, equally important, of its contemporary reiterations, be they manga and movies adaptations or commercial, consumer-oriented products such as mascots, stationary, fabrics, and other everyday objects.  Through our exhibit, we hope to demonstrate how a millennium old classic lives and thrives today in contemporary Japan.

Join your 1976 classmates for a spirited 9 or 18 holes of golf at the beautiful Ralph Myhre Golf Course! Complimentary tee times available from 10:00–11:00 AM. Lunch will be provided at the Tavern on the Tee. Register online by May 21 at go.middlebury.edu/50thgolf. Carts available day-of: $25 for 18 holes / $16 for 9 holes (per person, at check-in). You do not need a full group to register. If you have less than a foursome, the golf course will do their best to group you with other players. Questions? Join Tim Parsons, head horticulturist, for a short walk around campus. He will talk about the trees, shrubs, and flowers on the grounds and explain how the College manages the landscape and prepares for the future in a changing world. Meet in front of New Battell; ends at Proctor Terrace.

The 50th class will gather for a delightful evening of food, conversation, and celebration, joined by President Ian Baucom. The program will include brief remarks and the presentation of the class gift. Following dinner, classmates are invited to continue the evening on the roof of Bicentennial Hall for stargazing with faculty and staff from the Mittelman Observatory.

Join us for a morning hike up Snake Mountain. Sign up in the 25th class lounge in Prescott House, and meet there at 9:00am to carpool and depart. If you drive independently, meet at the trail head at 2514 Mountain Road in Addison.

Meet in front of New Battell for a walk across campus. Continue on to the Red Kelly Trail, which follows the perimeter of the College’s golf course. The course consists of moderately rolling terrain with several steep hills. 

Visit the current Special Collections exhibit “On Eggs-hibit: Nancy Willard’s Bread Loaf Eggs.” These quirky decorated wooden eggs, signed by authors Nancy met at Bread Loaf, are on display alongside literary works from the Abernethy Collection to celebrate the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference centennial.
