Moth wings on an old-style microphone

Inspired by the popular storytelling phenomenon The Moth, Cocoon is a special evening of true stories told live without notes. This year’s storytellers include Hafez Sami-Sadeghi ’28.5; faculty members James Fitzsimmons (Anthropology), Jerry Philogene (Black Studies), and Susan DeSimone (Biology); Director of Middlebury’s Abenaki School Jesse Bowman Bruchac, and three-time Moth GrandSLAM champion and educator Dr. Christine Gentry. They’ll all be telling stories on the theme “Before I Die,” in association with the public art installation in the lower lobby. Stay for a reception with the storytellers and organizers after the show. Cash bar.

This community-wide event is produced by the Middlebury MothUp in partnership with the Mahaney Arts Center. Co-organized by Middlebury Moth-Up students Katrina Lea ’27 and Mary Bosco ’28.5 in partnership with Mahaney Arts Center Director Liza Sacheli. Mahaney Arts Center Technical Director Mark Christensen provides the musical interludes.

This event is presented with real-time captioning. Running time: 1 hour, 30 minutes, including one intermission. For mature audiences.

Tickets: $15 public, $10 Middlebury faculty/staff, alumni, and emeriti; $8 youth; $5 Middlebury College students. Buy tickets: https://go.middlebury.edu/tickets (on sale beginning September 3). An encore stream of this event will also be available starting Wednesday, October 8 on the Robison Hall YouTube channel.
