Join us for the first meeting of the newly formed Academic Journal Club! This is a chance for students to learn about and present exciting research that is happening in all scientific fields outside of Middlebury. We will be discussing a seminal paper in the life sciences, and planning the future of this student organization!

Menominee Language Preservation

In this lunchtime discussion, Elder Napos (David Turney) will reflect on Menominee Nation language preservation efforts. Omaeqnomenewweqnaesen (Menominee Language) an Algonquian language originally spoken by Menominee people in Michigan and northern Wisconsin, currently is highly endangered: there are 4 fluent speakers left out of approximately 9,000 enrolled members. The discussion will focus on historical factors impacting Menominee language use, and current projects that promote language revitalization.

Come meet Dr. Michele Hernández Bayliss, premier college consultant and the author of several best selling books: A is for Admission, The Middle School Years, and Acing the College Application. As an assistant director of admissions at Dartmouth College, Hernández Bayliss has crafted a unique angle for assisting students to gain admission to the most selective colleges, incorporating her “inside perspective” on the admissions adventure. Hear Dr. Hernandez Bayliss share what makes a compelling personal statement, and how to avoid dull and predictable cliches.

Medical March Madness: Multiple Mini Interview Sessions

Several Health Professions schools use a “Multiple Mini Interview” (MMI) format and team challenges on their interview day. We plan to recreate these interview scenarios. There will be time to learn about the MMI, to see it in action and also practice. Join us for one of the two sessions! Session 1 is from 9:00-11:30 AM and Session 2 is from 12:00-2:30 PM. Only 10 spots available at each session. RSVP at go/mmirsvp by Wednesday, March 1st. Snacks will be provided

Medical March Madness: Eliza Menninger, MD, '82 and P'18

A practicing psychiatrist at Harvard’s McLean Hospital and a longstanding member of the Harvard Medical School Admissions Committee, Dr. Menninger will speak broadly as to what makes for a competitive medical school candidate. She’ll provide us with general insights into how an admissions committee reviews an application, and what makes for an effective and compelling personal statement. Dr. Menninger will share her thoughts on what makes a candidate stand out in a sea of applicants. We’ll finish the hour with a chance to ask Dr. Menninger questions.

Come to an information packed session where we answer the 20 most commonly asked questions by students going through the application process. Hear how to build a school list, approach secondary prompts, know when it’s appropriate to send a school an update, learn all you need to know about the queue, letters of intent and everything in between. Mary Lothrop, Hannah Benz and Nicole Veilleux will walk you through the next steps in your journey to professional school.
