FFW 2017: STEM Innovation Program at Middlebury

The Stem Innovation Program is a creative interdisciplinary program designed to challenge students to formulate and implement a solution to a scientific or technological problem. Each year, a team of students from a variety of STEM departments and disciplines implement a technological solution to a real-world problem. Their goal is to develop a deliverable product in 10 weeks through technological innovation, collaboration, and iteration. We’ll learn about the 2017 project and have an opportunity to engage in a conversation about the role of STEM in the liberal arts.

Historical Legacies and Ethnic Conflict: Evidence from 12 Centuries of Hindu-Muslim Violence in India

Ajay Verghese is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Riverside. His research is focused on Indian politics, ethnicity, political violence, and historical legacies. His book, The Colonial Origins of Ethnic Violence in India, was published by Stanford University Press in 2016. From 2017-18 he will be a Fulbright scholar in India to study the effects of socioeconomic development on Hindu and Muslim religiosity.

Jon will highlight the Department’s Critical Language Scholarship program, student internship opportunities and the Rangel and Pickering Fellowship programs. They will also discuss Foreign and Civil Service career opportunities, including the Consular Fellows program that targets applicants with proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Russian and Arabic.

Description: The Honorable Allison Dale Burroughs is a Midd alum and United States District Judge for the District of Massachusetts. She has had J-term interns the past few years. Earlier this year she was in the news for blocking Trump’s travel ban.
