International Peace Day

The Language Studies Department invites you to celebrate the International Day of Peace with us on Thursday, September 21 at the Samson Patio from 10am-12pm. This event will include short speeches and reflections on peace in multiple languages. Cohorts from Arabic, French, English, Japanese, and Spanish will be presenting in their target languages. The event is open to the campus at large and we welcome all students to share how to say “peace” in their native languages. The UN theme for this internationally recognized day is “Actions for Peace: Our Ambitions for the #Global Goals.”

Peacebuilding and Conflict in the Balkans: Expert panel and student project fair

This event introduces attendees to the many facets of peacebuilding and conflict transformation in the Western Balkans, with a special emphasis on examinations of nationalism, women and LGBT advocacy, and language policy. From 11:00-11:50, a panel of experts from Serbia and Bosnia will introduce the MIIS community to a wide range of conflict transformation challenges and lessons learned.

Storytelling, Environment, and Intercultural Action: A Graphic Novel about Maritime Strategy in Ghana

Join MIIS graduate Nick Tomb (MAIPS, 2002) as he talks about the creation and publication of his recently published graphic novel, The Adventures of Maritime Domain Awareness Man, an inspiring new story that ignites passion for environmental protection and advocacy featuring African heroes and folklore that will “edutain” younger generations to think about what is happening in our global waters and what they can do to save our seas.
