This multidisciplinary exhibit explores the kimono in dialogue with Japanese literature, Western aesthetics, fashion, and fiber crafts.

On Thursday, January 29th, the College community and the public are invited to the dedication of the timber frame of a Japanese teahouse, built by twelve students over the course of the four-week 2026 Winter Term. The teahouse will be dedicated in a traditional Shinto ceremony.  
Taught by Douglas Brooks, a builder of boats and other traditional structures who has extensive experience working in Japan, the course is entitled Building the Japanese Teahouse and seeks to introduce students to the pedagogy of Japanese appren

Featuring artists Faith Ringgold and Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter, Paint Me a Road Out of Here uncovers the whitewashed history of Ringgold’s masterpiece, “For the Women’s House,” following its 50-year journey from Rikers Island jail to the Brooklyn Museum in a poignant, funny and true parable of a world without mass incarceration.

Presented by the Johnson Exhibition Gallery and sponsored by the Studio Art Department.

Recorded through jail phone lines, and mixed by award-winning producers, the album amplifies the creativity and resilience of people behind bars, transforming isolation into connection and abolitionist action.
