Wes Andrews, a 2013 graduate of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, will be leading a discussion on the challenges and pitfalls of monitoring active conflict in Ukraine on Wednesday, November 7th from 6 – 8PM in McGowan 102, 411 Pacific Street in Monterey. Among other topics, Wes will discuss his experience working for the Organization for Security Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the situation and conflict in Eastern Ukraine, as well as the challenges involved in monitoring active conflicts.

The Sustainability Council would like to inform the students about current projects and how they can get involved in sustainability projects on campus. Earth Week committee sign-ups will be held during this meeting.

There will be a reception at Samson following the Spring Commencement ceremony at Colton Hall.

The Spring Commencement Ceremony will take place virtually in a live stream format. The ceremony will begin at 4:00PM (Pacific Time). All speeches will be done live and graduates names will be announced individually for their degrees accompanied by customized slides. Live stream link: TBA.

The History and Restoration of the Royal Presidio Chapel

The general history of California shore whaling, and many of the photographs that survive, have become fairly familiar over the past few years as historians have excavated some of the evidence with newfound enthusiasm. However, many compelling highlights and intriguing sidelights have been overlooked, including the origins and deep water backgrounds of some of the principals, the concentration of crew men from the Azores, Martha’s Vineyard, and Japan, their migrations and transfers among the whaling stations.

Step back in time…and wander into the present. The Junior League of Monterey County is pleased to invite you to explore our historic headquarters, the Old Whaling Station in Monterey. Discover how the neglected adobe home was lovingly restored over time by the members of the Junior League. Learn about the intriguing, sometimes mysterious history of a building that has evolved over 160 years of personal and business use. From candle light to electricity, outhouses to indoor plumbing, each owner has made unique contributions to the property.

Old Monterey Foundation continues its popular season of free lecture events as part of its 2018 Lecture Series sponsored by The Marcia F. Devoe Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County with its third event. This lecture by Christine Fernández will focus on Angustias de la Guerra Ord (1815-1890), a prominent Californio woman who is considered by scholars today as the first woman historian of Hispanic California.

THE OLD MONTEREY FOUNDATION PRESENTS: “BUFFALO SOLDIERS: From the Presido of San Francisco to the Presidio of Monterey” Join National Park Service Ranger Alejandra Iraheta for an engaging lecture about the African American Buffalo Soldiers and their connection to both the Presidio of Monterey and Presidio of San Francisco, as well as their extraordinary contributions to our nation in a time of overt racism and segregation. Participants will learn about some of the more prominent Buffalo Soldiers including Charles Young and William H. Thompkins.
