Bear Island Design Assembly (BIDA) Information Session

Bear Island Design Assembly (BIDA) is a pro-bono student design-build program led jointly by McLeod Kredell Architects of Middlebury and Marvel Architects of New York. Participants may consider the program an intensive externship with the two firms. For the first week of September, the IDA team lives and works together on a small, rugged island in Maine, designing and building a project to benefit a local community.

Gender and language ideologies in the Arab world: Moroccan artists 'blacklisted'

Atiqa Hachimi is an Associate Professor at University of Toronto. She is a sociolinguist and Arabic specialist whose teaching contributes to the programs for Women’s and Gender Studies and African Studies. Her research focuses on social and language change in the Arabic-speaking world, particularly in Morocco.

Andrew Flowers, former Quantitative Editor and Economics Writer for FiveThirtyEight.com, will profile six types of data journalism stories. Several stories will serve as examples, such as p-hacking in nutrition studies, police officer shootings, Uber’s effect on taxis, and what local characteristics explain Donald Trump’s electoral victory.

An American Ascent

As part of its 100th year anniversary celebrations, the Middlebury Mountain Club will be hosting a screening of An American Ascent, a documentary film about the first African-American expedition to tackle North America’s highest peak, Denali. By taking on the grueling, 20,310 foot peak, the nine African-American climbers set out to shrink the ‘adventure gap’ by building a legacy of inclusion in the outdoor/adventure community.
