This inquiry into performativity is crucial to the inception and development of a thought-provoking project directed by Scholar in Residence Karima Borni in collaboration with Chavez, accessing embodied presence to cultivate authenticity and responsiveness. This performance is an interdisciplinary adaptation of Toni Morrison’s short story, created by Michole Biancosino ’98 of theatre, Christal Brown of dance, and Matthew Taylor of music. Two girls become friends despite the racial and social differences of their mothers. As they grow into women and mothers themselves, an old memory comes back to haunt them.

Immediately following the performance, the creators and performers will discuss the challenges of staging this Morrison short story that explores the tortured ways we deal with race and color.

Brown’s class focuses on developing the total artist. Exercises will focus on alignment, torso and spinal flexibility, clarity of focus, upper body strength, lower body strength, and abdominal control. Working to transform philosophical notions of being into movement explorations, students will discover intersections between technique and performance: yielding transference. Free
