Sleepless in Middlebury is a 72hr filmmaking competition designed as an optional orientation event for first year students. A small team of creative collaborators will make a film from start to finish in only a few short days. This screening is the culminating event and will showcase the films made in the last 72 hours.

Based on investigative reporting by Bloomberg News, Can’t Look Away: the Case Against Social Media exposes the real-world consequences of tech companies’ digital practices and widespread concerns over harmful algorithms. Through emotional testimonies and high-stakes legal battles, the film explores the tension between corporate profit and child safety, highlighting systemic failures that leave young users vulnerable.

Vanish is described as a “eulogy for a rural way of life that is disappearing, but it also serves a clarion call for all of us to preserve what’s left and what matters.” The screening will be followed by a Q&A and a reception with photographer and producer, Jim Westphalen.

This public event will welcome a delegation of Maori and Pasifika colleagues visiting Middlebury College from Aotearoa/New Zealand. Panel members will discuss the role of purakau (storytelling), waiata (song), and whakatauki (proverbs) in Indigenous Maori and Polynesian practices of wellbeing and planetary stewardship.
