Two children on a playground

Hirschfield International Film Series: Playground

Sponsored by:
Film & Media Culture
In this debut feature by writer-director Laura Wandel, the everyday reality of grade school is seen from a child’s-eye-view as an obstacle course of degradation and abuse. Transposing the gritty realism of such filmmakers as Jacques Audiard and the Dardennes Brothers to the inner world of kids, Wandel crafts an empathetic and visceral portrait of the cruelty of children, and the failure of adults to protect them. Shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best International Film. In French with English subtitles. (1 hour 12 minutes.) Free.

HowMiddWorks Divestment Forum

Middlebury’s Endowment represents a financial resource of over $1 billion dollars, and is made up of funds given by donors. The College has hired Investure, an investment management firm, to oversee the management of this resource. Approximately 5% of the endowment is invested in fossil fuel companies, a fact which has sparked discussion among the student body, the SGA, and the administration. The topic of divestment of the endowment from fossil fuels will be the subject of an upcoming forum open to all students, and will feature David Provost, CFO and Treasurer of the College.
