We are excited to welcome author and educator John Warner to Middlebury this Tuesday, March 11, 2025 for a special presentation titled “Resist, Renew, Explore: How to Think About Human Writing and Learning in the Age of AI.” Now that we have easy access to technology that produces text with unmatched speed and fluency, we’re questioning the role writing plays in school, work, and society and how to maintain the integrity of writing in educational contexts.

The No Man’s Land Film Festival is coming to Middlebury, VT for the first time! 

Umar Serajuddin ‘96 will return to campus for a conversation moderated by Lomus Pudasaini ‘25 (Economics) and Lillian Caldwell ‘26 (Economics). This discussion explores pathways, out of the current polycrisis, to achieve progress toward eradicating poverty and boosting shared prosperity on a livable planet. The conversation is centered on the findings of the World Bank’s newly released Poverty, Prosperity, and Planet Report 2024: Pathways Out of the Polycrisis, which provides the first post-pandemic global assessment of poverty and shared prosperity.

Come learn about how research and advocacy for alternative proteins is contributing to the transition to a more just, ethical, and sustainable food system.

Nathan Ahlgrim is the Academic Director at the Good Food Institute. He frequently speaks at universities and works closely with student groups to foster collaboration in sustainable food technologies. Nathan’s expertise is deeply rooted in the intersection of science, food systems, and sustainability, making him a perfect fit for engaging Middlebury’s environmentally-conscious student body. 

Charlie Kronick ‘78 will join a conversation moderated by students Maya Teiman ‘25 and Ken Deng ‘24.5. The impacts of climate change, including physical impacts - rising sea levels, shrinking glaciers, more intense extreme weather events (including Helene and Milton) - are ubiquitous and plain to see. The climate crisis is an existential threat on a variety of levels. Yet the response to this global problem is disputed, deeply polarizing, far from rational and for many audiences signifies far beyond its actual “real world” manifestation.

The October screening of the Hirschfield series features a Chinese film that premiered in the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival. Only the River Flows is an atmospheric thriller set in rural China, following a murder investigation that quickly leads to an obvious arrest and to many unanswered questions. Professor Chialan Sharon Wang will introduce the film, and the screening will be followed by a brief discussion led by Professor Nikolina Dobreva. Join us outside Dana to celebrate with pizza and popcorn at 6:30 PM
