The Fall Forum is a flagship tradition at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies that provides an opportunity for students and the wider community to participate in and witness a multilingual conference and learn how professional language services play a pivotal role in its success. The topic of Fall Forum 2024 is “Waves of Change - Our Lives and Water”.

Title: Bridging Languages: Cross-Linguistic Strategies to Boost L2 Chinese Vocabulary

Abstract
How can educators leverage a child’s first language (L1) knowledge to enhance their
learning of a second language (L2)? What kinds of linguistic transfer occur between two
seemingly distinct languages, English and Chinese? Pertaining to the cross-linguistic
associations between English and Chinese, a few studies have shown correlations,
such as between bilinguals’ morphological awareness (MA) of compounding structures

Join us to learn about the TAMC Fellowship, an exciting new collaboration between the Middlebury Institute and the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC). Ariana Green from TAMC and Professor Guillén will discuss how this partnership was formed and the unique opportunities it offers students. Two TAMC student fellows will be hired for this school year, with the chance to contribute to projects such as the Salinas Sidewalk Art Project.

This is an invitation to our campus community to come together and honor all of the lives lost in the past year on the anniversary of October 7.

We will meet during the lunch hour in the garden for this tribute. Any words to memorialize lives lost or poems are welcome.

Mandatory graduating student information meeting for those planning to graduate in December 2024. Information surrounding commencement will be presented and graduating student speaker nominees will present summaries of their speeches. Join us in person at
Irvine Auditorium or join virtually via Zoom (link will be sent by email to all graduating students a few days prior to meeting).

Abstract: Across languages, prescriptive ideologies have traditionally been used to teach language classes. Nevertheless, adhering strictly to a prescriptive perspective in the teaching of formal, standard, and/or “academic” language without questioning its ideological and discriminatory function leads to the reproduction of a deficit perspective, in which those who use alternative varieties of the language are considered academically deficient.
