The “Field Guide for Foreign Languages, Cultures and Literatures Majors” brings back Foreign Languages alumni to help students think broadly about where their study in Foreign Languages, Cultures and Literatures might take them, and learn about the many career paths developed by alumni. The Field Guide is designed to answer the perennial question, “What can I do with my liberal arts major or degree?” The Field Guide features an alumni panel, followed by an informal reception, allowing students, alumni, and faculty to connect.

The Taste of Home a documentary about the German Mobile Kitchen Project

Amir Firestone ‘17 will screen a documentary in which he participated while working with refugees in Germany. The documentary “The Taste of Home” tells the story of the German project Kitchen on the Run, a mobile kitchen and “integration incubator” that traveled through Europe in 2016 to organize cooking events with refugees and locals at each location (Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden) with the intention of creating personal encounters at eye-level.

Public Lecture on German artist Käthe Kollwitz

2017 marks the 150th birthday of German artist Käthe Kollwitz. Famous for her socially engaged art especially between the two World Wars, Kollwitz and her social engagement for the poor, for children, and for war victims have often been studied through the lens of her biography—having lost a son in the war, much of her adult life was characterized by grieving this loss. Prof. McVeigh’s lecture seeks to broaden the focus and contextualize Käthe Kollwitz’ work as an artist and as a social activist in the context of the women’s movement in the first half of the 20th century.

The German Theater Group at Middlebury presents this semester’s German play, “Hänsel und Gretel oder: Die mörderischen Kinder von Finsterwalde.” In this fresh take on the Grimms’ famous fairy tale, a police detective and his assistant are left to wonder what really happened in the house of a very old lady who is found brutally murdered one morning. Do Hänsel and Gretel, caught in the woods not far from the crime scene, tell the truth when they claim that the old woman was a cannibalistic witch who tortured the children for days?
