MIIS-Library

Staff and faculty are invited to join SAT and librarian Joelle Mellon at the MIIS Library for pizza and board games on Thursday, May 2, from 4-7pm (feel free to come and go as it works with your schedule). Available games include Taboo, Scattergories, Scrabble, Apples to Apples, Mahjong, and more. Joelle will also be providing a “how-to-play” session of Dominion, if you’re interested in learning a game that is popular with MIIS students.

Build community by playing environmentally themed games! Student volunteers and library staff members will be offering “learn to play” sessions of Cascadia, a tabletop game about pairing wildlife with appropriate habitats and Daybreak, a cooperative game in which everyone works together to stop climate change and collectively wins (or loses!). Other nature/Earth related games will also be available to play and check out at the end of the session.

Have you ever wanted to make custom miniatures of your characters for Dungeons & Dragons or other games? Interested in handheld models of sharks, jellyfish and other undersea life? Or how about a brightly colored bookmark or luggage tag for a holiday (Easter, Purim, Holi or …) gift? Grab your laptop and come to this 3-D printing workshop at Monterey Public Library — exclusively for the MIIS community! Beginners are welcome.

Live an entire year in 17th-19th century Tokyo and try to become the best “Child of Edo,” by encouraging the city’s well-being and prosperity. Hire characters with various skills, put them to work in Nihonbashi (the commercial center), and increase their experience until they retire. Choose among artisans, street vendors, shopkeepers to create an authentic Edo era marketplace. Win by embodying “IKI,” — otherwise known as the ideal way of life in historic Tokyo.

Do you want to send a Valentine to a friend, your mom, or your not-so-secret crush? Have you looked at the ones on sale in Target and found that none of them are quite right? Learn how to use Electric Zine Maker software to make a personalized, one-of-a-kind zine that you can give to anyone in your life — or just someone you wish was in your life! Please bring a PC laptop to the event, if possible.

Thinking about mailing cards to friends and family this December? You could send a zine instead! They’re personalized, uniquely beautiful and free. Join Joelle and Lindsay for a workshop that teaches you to use Electric Zine Maker software to create an alternative card for the holidays.

Join your fellow MIIS community members for an afternoon of Dungeons and Dragons in the library! Both beginners and experienced players are welcome. Dice and pre-generated character sheets will be available, so all you need to bring is your sense of adventure! Pre-registration is preferred, but drop-ins will be accommodated if space allows.

In the tabletop game of Flamecraft, artisan dragons, the magically talented versions of their larger cousins, are sought by shopkeepers to delight their customers. As one of the resident Flamekeepers, you will gather items, place dragons and cast enchantments to enhance the shops of your town. Skilled in the art of conversing with dragons, you will always be enticing them to produce more wondrous things.

Wanted: Beginner Dungeons and Dragons players! Do you love Baldur’s Gate 3 and want to experience real D&D? Come to the library to make the elvish wizard, dragonborn paladin, halfling rogue or even human bard of your dreams! (Other character types will also be available.). All materials will be provided for you to roll up the stats for a playable character.
