Professor Emeritus of the History of Art and Architecture Glenn Andres gives an illustrated lecture on Middlebury’s past as a center of mill industry. He will touch on the significance of the local textile and marble industries, their role in shaping the town, and the people whose lives were intertwined with them. Offered as part of the Fridays at the Museum series, and in conjunction with Saturday’s performance Kannapolis: A Moving Portrait. Free

An informal, interdisciplinary works-in-progress showing with Maree ReMalia and friends. Come see the projects that ReMalia and her collaborators from Hatch Arts Collective (South Korea) and Middlebury College are working on this month drawing from their backgrounds in dance, theater, visual art, writing, and film. On the eve of their graduation, senior History of Art & Architecture majors Kelsey Follansbee’16.5, Alex Gimbel ’16.5, Ennissa Martin ’16.5, and Carolina McGarity ’16.5 share their research on pieces in the Museum’s collection. J Finley, Assistant Professor of American Studies, will discuss works from Kara Walker’s monumental print cycle Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated), exploring how the artist uses theatricality, citation, and satire to remind viewers of the importance of looking back. What meanings does the body carry, and how have artists grappled with its representation? Join Ellery Foutch, Assistant Professor in the American Studies Program, for a conversation about the bodies of American Faces, from a publicity image of conjoined twins and nineteenth-century celebrities Chang and Eng Bunker to caricatures of President Obama.
