On the eve of their graduation, senior History of Art & Architecture majors Kelsey Follansbee’16.5, Alex Gimbel ’16.5, Ennissa Martin ’16.5, and Carolina McGarity ’16.5 share their research on pieces in the Museum’s collection. Works on view will include an American photograph, an Indian drawing, a Flemish Book of Hours, and a Dutch portrait. Part of the Fridays at the Museum series. Theatricality and Taboo: A Look at Kara Walker's Silhouettes

J Finley, Assistant Professor of American Studies, will discuss works from Kara Walker’s monumental print cycle Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated), exploring how the artist uses theatricality, citation, and satire to remind viewers of the importance of looking back. Gallery Talk: The Bodies of "American Faces"

What can we learn from looking at how bodies are depicted in the portraits included in the exhibition American Faces: A Cultural History of Portraiture and Identity? What meanings does the body carry, and how have artists grappled with its representation? Join Ellery Foutch, Assistant Professor in the American Studies Program, for a conversation about the bodies of American Faces, from a publicity image of conjoined twins and nineteenth-century celebrities Chang and Eng Bunker to caricatures of President Obama.
