  • Summer Exhibition Celebrates the Vermont Landscape

    May 3, 2009

    On Thurs., May 21 the Middlebury College Museum of Art opens an exhibition of 78 works by Italian-born painter and portraitist Luigi Lucioni, including various articles of memorabilia from his life. The exhibit chronicles the artist’s affinity for the Vermont landscape and illustrates how he employed a mixture of media and subject matter to sustain an accomplished career that spanned sixty years and produced more than one thousand paintings.

  • Environmental Artist to Speak at Middlebury College

    Environmental artist Stacy Levy will speak at Middlebury College in the Hillcrest Environmental Center, Rm. 103, at 4:30 p.m. on Tues., Apr. 7. Her lecture is titled “Picturing the Earth: Making Visible the Patterns of Commonplace Nature.”

    Kara Walker’s Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated), a recent gift to the Museum, provides a focus for understanding contemporary artists’ determination to probe the historical record.

    A newly acquired, iconic image of a tree and enlarged photomicrographs of snowflakes are featured in this installation of works by the Starn brothers, identical twins whose singular aesthetic practice demonstrates a passionate interest in history and technological exploration.

  • Silent Auction of Chinese Kites to Benefit United Way July 8–August 10, 2008

    The Middlebury College Museum of Art will hold a silent auction of hand-made Chinese kites to benefit the United Way of Addison County from Tuesday, July 8, through Sunday, August 10.

  • Middlebury College Friends of the Art Museum Honor Eight for Excellence in the Visual Arts

    Each year the Friends of the Art Museum at Middlebury College recognize those who have made significant contributions to the community, either through their creative endeavors or through support for the visual arts in Addison County. At their Annual Meeting on Sun., May 4, the Friends honored eight individuals in six categories.

  • Classical Painting and Ritual Bronzes on View at Middlebury Museum

    This exhibition brings together two of the most revered traditions in Chinese art: paintings of nature, primarily landscape and flora, and bronze vessels and musical instruments used in antiquity to venerate the ancestors.

  • College Museum Filled with Chinese Kites

    Dragons, phoenixes, snakes, bats, and mythical figures fill the sky in this exhibition of hand-crafted kites using traditional materials—bamboo, paper, and silk. The majority of these kites come from Weifang, the birthplace of kite making.

    This exhibition will replace the “Beyond Chinggis Khan: Mongolian Buddhist Art from the Rubin Museum of Art” which has been canceled.

  • College Museum Acquires Important Cycladic Figurine

    February 15, 2008

    In Dec. the Middlebury College Museum of Art acquired at auction at Christie’s, New York, a rare Early Cycladic figurine. The small marble object, which depicts a nude female standing some five and one half inches tall, is thought to have been involved in rites surrounding death and burial.
