Limiting the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 is essential to protecting our community. Middlebury’s strategy is multilayered and uses the “Swiss cheese model” of pandemic defense. Imagine each layer of protection against the virus as a slice of Swiss cheese. While each layer is imperfect with holes that can allow the virus to pass through, by combining multiple layers—daily health checks, face coverings, physical distancing, frequent handwashing, COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, quarantine and isolation, building ventilation, and visitor and travel restrictions—the chance of spreading the virus is significantly reduced.
This section describes the essential health and safety measures that have become part of daily life during the pandemic. Each member of the campus community has a responsibility to follow these practices to protect themselves and others.
