Goldwater Scholarship


To provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals for academic study and research in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering by awarding scholarships to outstanding sophomores and juniors who demonstrate interest in related fields.

The stipend covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 annually, independent of need.  Maximum:  2 years for juniors; 1 year for seniors.

Up to 250

Students who are US citizens, resident aliens, or US nationals, sophomores and juniors, and having a 3.0 or better GPA are eligible to apply. NOTE:  Students who plan to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice.

Nomination application deadline is noon on Nov. 8, Goldwater final deadline is in January.

To apply, you must be nominated by Middlebury. Middlebury can nominate up to four candidates.

To be nominated, interested candidates must 1. complete a profile and preliminary Goldwater application online at by the internal deadline; 2. email copies of your unofficial transcript, a current resume and your state of permanent residence to .Note: no letters of recommendation are required at this stage, only the names of potential recommenders.

Also, submit the online Fellowships Permissions and Waiver form. 

Selected nominees will solicit letters of recommendation and work with the fellowships advisor to prepare for the final Goldwater submission deadline in January.
