Recycling and Waste Management at Middlebury
Middlebury College minds waste. And it shows.
Middlebury has come a long way over the years with regard to Recycling and Waste Management. From starting our recycling program in a 600-square-foot coal storage space to designing and building our 5,700-square-foot Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Because of our incredible recycling and composting programs, over 60% of campus waste never goes in the landfill.
Our compost program started with compacting roll-offs at each kitchen with the food waste being hauled four and a half hours away to New York. Today, we operate a custom designed hook-lift truck, collecting from the kitchens daily, and processing the compost at our very own facility, only 4 miles away.
