Twitter is a social networking site where users send and read messages called tweets. Twitter is considered a type of micro-blog because the number of characters is limited, similar to text messaging. The unique thing about Twitter is that the message is then delivered to 'followers': friends, acquaintances and other people with whom one shares a common interest. Users can restrict the broadcast of their tweets or allow open access.
