50th Anniversary

For half a century, Middlebury College student-athletes have helped local resident Butch Varno—who suffers from cerebral palsy—enjoy sporting events and other activities in the community. During these five decades, basketball players have brought Butch to football games, football players have brought him to basketball games, and many other athletes from track, swimming, soccer, and other teams have made a wonderful difference in Butch's life.

At the Homecoming football game on Saturday, October 23, 2010, Butch was recognized by returning alumni both during the game and at a special reception in Lawson Lounge, following the game. Friends of Butch Varno gathered together to honor Butch and “his” players—football and basketball, alike! Find us on Facebook

A past ESPN feature on Picking Up Butch was an Emmy Award-winning video featuring Butch and several athletes. ESPN took the Picking Up Butch story national again with the 50th anniversary celebration, and a feature on E:60.

The CBS Evening News also has featured Butch (right).
