Bill McKibben awarded 2012 Vermonter of the Year

January 17, 2013

The Burlington Free Press named Bill McKibben- author, activist, and Schumann Scholar at Middlebury College- 2012 Vermonter of the Year. McKibben, a prominent leader in the environmental movement, brings to light the universal impacts of climate change and the importance of taking thoughtful and collective action against it.

McKibben values the role played by communities in bringing forth change, making this local award particularly meaningful. “It’s a great honor,” said McKibben, “precisely because I love Vermont so much.  It really reflects that Middlebury as we call it has been a tremendous part of the local community and that it’s not some kind of bubble.”

McKibben’s energy inspires Middlebury College, a place that takes great pride in its environmental initiatives. Student passion coupled with support from the administration allow for initiatives such as 350.org, Carbon Neutrality by 2016, and the recent divestment movement to grow. McKibben believes that fostering this culture of environmental awareness and action at the college prepares students to, in his words, “go on and fight the bigger battles.” “Middlebury,” McKibben says, “ is poised to do the right thing in the right way.”

Nan Jenks-Jay, Dean of Environmental Affairs at Middlebury College, credits McKibben for leading Vermonters and individuals around the globe in a brilliant yet humble manner: “Vermont is so fortunate to have Bill McKibben in our midst influencing students, citizens, and policy makers, and in the heart of the Green Mountains he loves so dearly – Bill is probably skiing at Rickert Ski Center near his home in Ripton at the very moment!” Members of the Middlebury College and Vermont community will continue to look to McKibben for thoughtful insight and motivation in the year 2013 and long after.
