MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Middlebury College has announced a new student scholarship opportunity and invites nominations.

With funding and inspiration from the late Helen Gurley Brown’s foundation, the Pussycat Foundation, Middlebury College is one of four founding institutions in the BOLD Women’s Leadership Network, a new cross-institutional scholarship established to nurture leadership skills in women. BOLD scholars—women in their junior year—will receive generous financial support, intensive academic and career mentoring, the opportunity to undertake a campus transformation project, and an international immersion experience.

The BOLD Network is committed to supporting young women from all backgrounds and especially those who have been significantly underrepresented in higher education, and inspiring them to “leverage their own identities, strengths, and collective knowledge to positively impact social change and foster inclusive campus environments.”

Middlebury joins Rutgers University - Newark, California State University at Fullerton, and Smith College in the two-year pilot, with each campus selecting 10 BOLD scholars this fall.

Nominators should read more below and online about the program and fill out the nomination form. Students may also self-nominate. The nomination deadline is November 11, 2016.

Students must meet the following criteria to be considered for the BOLD scholarship:

  • Junior standing (as of Fall 2016)
  • Students who are women and/or identify as women
  • Full-time status
  • Good academic standing
  • Exceptional leadership abilities demonstrated through action (both formal and informal)
  • Strong critical thinking skills and demonstrated ability or desire to facilitate challenging discourse
  • Demonstrated passion for social equity
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in groups

Students will be selected via a multi-stage nomination and selection process conducted by BOLD national staff with support from local site coordinators and volunteer evaluators on each campus. From the pool of all nominees, a group of students at each institution will have the opportunity to participate in a large-group interview, with finalists being invited back for a one-on-one interview. The final cohort of 10 women at each institution will be selected in December 2016.
