Our Approach

Counseling’s graduate internship program provides opportunities for graduate students in counseling-based programs to develop clinical skills in a college setting.

Graduate interns work with students under careful supervision provided by the combined efforts of on-site supervisors and graduate program faculty. Supervisors typically find themselves teaching, modeling, consulting, and even co-counseling with interns. Interns in the training program will learn about human development specific to the college population and gain an understanding of the role of counseling and student health within higher education institutions.

Counseling interns can expect to:

  • Meet with students for one-on-one counseling sessions
  • Facilitate groups
  • Conduct crisis interventions
  • Participate in meetings and case consultations with other clinicians and staff
  • Have the opportunity to attend professional development trainings

How to Apply

Applications for Counseling interns open early each calendar year (January/February) for masters or doctoral candidates who are fulfilling requirements for clinical placement as a part of their programs. Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate program that provides faculty-based supervision and oversight for off-site clinical placements. Counseling has existing relationships with Vermont-based programs at Northern Vermont University, St. Michael’s College, and the University of Vermont. Students in other programs are welcome to apply and should reach out to Associate Director of Counseling Sarah Lawrence to verify program eligibility.

Interns are selected each spring and begin training on-site in August. Interns are selected for a full academic year of clinical service.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR THE 2024-2025 ACADEMIC YEAR IS NOW CLOSED.
