Dining Halls
All students in College Campus Housing are enrolled in the Unlimited Dining Meal Plan. The Unlimited Dining Meal Plan gives you access to our three on campus Dining Halls, as often as you would like. If you are an Off Campus Student, please contact Dining Services for your college dining options.
You can check out our menus for each dining hall, updated daily.
Proctor Dining Hall
Proctor has two different serving lines that give students plenty of options for hot, freshly prepared foods. Four beverage stations are scattered throughout the dining room as well as a large salad, soup and deli bar. Proctor is also home to our popular panini station for those who prefer to prepare meals themselves using ingredients found throughout the dining hall. Students may choose to eat in the main dining area, on the cozy couches and round tables of proctor lounge, in the more intimate booth room, upstairs or outside on the sunny patio and picnic tables. Proctor is open seven days a week for three meals a day. Breakfast is 7am to 10am. Continental Breakfast is 10am to 11am. Brunch is served Saturday and Sundays from 7am to 11 am. Lunch is 11am to 2pm. Dinner is 4:30pm to 8pm
Atwater Dining Hall
Atwater has high sloped ceilings and its walls, consisting largely of windows, provide diners with natural light and views toward the Town of Middlebury to the east, and the Green Mountains beyond. The 21,400 square foot oval-shaped dining hall seats 225, features display cooking, a hearth oven which is the focal point as students enter the dining room, and diners may view the food being prepared as they pass through an open serving and cooking area with four cooking platforms and two islands. Atwater Dining Hall boasts a vegetated roof and popular outdoor terraces as well as a seminar room for meetings and classes. Atwater is open for lunch and dinner, Monday through Friday. Lunch is 11am to 2pm. Dinner is 5pm to 8:30pm
Atwater is available to be reserved for events on Saturdays with Catering department approval. There is a minimum charge of $1,500 for products and services required to hold an event in the Atwater dining space. Please reach out to the catering office for further clarification on how this minimum may be met. The intention behind this guideline is to support the best use of the limited availability of the space.
Ross Dining Hall
Ross is a 400-seat facility that opened in the Fall of 2002 and is located on the western edge of the campus. The Ross building complex includes residential living and classrooms so that living, dining and learning all take place in the same area in an environment that encourages a melding of academics and social life. Ross dining hall has high ceilings and a large window wall facing New York’s Adirondack Mountains and amazing views of the sunset. Four open concept kitchen stations allow students to watch as their food is prepared and gives them the flexibility to assemble exactly what they would like to enjoy from the days offerings. Ross is open seven days a week. Monday through Friday for breakfast 7am to 9:30am with continental breakfast 9:30am to 11am. Lunch 11am to 2pm. Continual dining options available Monday through Friday 2pm to 3:30pm. Dinner is 5:30pm to 8:30pm seven days a week. Brunch/Lunch is served Saturdays and Sundays 8am-2pm
Recipes From Home
Students and families are encouraged to share their favorite recipes from home! We’ll do our best to incorporate them into our dining options.
Dining Hall Policies and Procedures
Middlebury College Dining Services is committed to providing students with ample access to food with a variety of healthy and delicious meal options, ensuring that they have a positive dining experience. The college operates three all-you-care-to-eat dining halls, including Atwater, open five days a week and Proctor, and Ross, which are open seven days a week. The Unlimited Dining Meal Plan gives students access to the dining halls as often as they would like using their ID card to gain entrance. All on-campus students are automatically signed up for this plan which includes $25 of declining balance per semester.
Dining Hall Options- what happens in the Dining Hall
The dining halls offer a wide range of food options, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices. Students can choose from a variety of dishes, including freshly prepared entrees, soups, salads, sandwiches, and desserts. The dining halls also offer unlimited buffet choices, so a student can enjoy as much food as they want while in the dining hall.
One meal swipe, upon entrance to the dining hall, entitles the diner to the food being served for that meal period and must be consumed in the dining hall. In addition to this meal, students can get specific supplemental food to go when they leave the dining hall that is included in a meal swipe.
Take Away Options- what happens outside of the Dining Hall
We realize there may be times where a student may miss a meal and we offer a reusable container to address that, but we are not a store and there are limits on what can be taken. A missed meal is designed to use only one reusable container per meal period. No other to-go container is permitted due to health regulations.
A diner may also leave the dining hall with only a baked good, sandwich, hand fruit, dessert, or beverage.
However, no silverware, china plates or bowls, glass or mug can leave the dining hall. The loss of these items due to their removal and subsequent replacement unnecessarily impacts Middlebury College Dining Services and may lead to an increase in the cost of providing this service in the future.
Middlebury College Dining Services strives to ensure that its policies and practices are fair and equitable. If you feel that this is not the case, we would like to hear from you by submitting a comment card.
