Weather Station

The Middlebury College campus now features a professional-grade, commercial weather station which provides current weather conditions (temperature, wind speed, wet bulb globe temperature, etc.), radar, daily/hourly forecasts and information concerning any active area hazardous weather alerts. The weather station is located on the south end of the newly renovated Kohn Field complex.

Lightning Alerts & Timers

Lightning Alerts

The Middlebury College campus has also installed an Earth Network automated outdoor lightning alert system designed to covering various outdoor recreational and athletic locations. This system is designed to alert individuals of any lightning activity within an 8-mile radius through audible tons and flashing strobes

Lightning detection and alerting devices are present in 5* locations. (Note, although 5 locations are listed, each lightning alert device covers adjacent spaces. The audible tone has a range of approximately a quarter of a mile).

  • The Ralph Myhre Golf Course
  • Kohn Field
  • Newly renovated baseball and softball stadiums
  • Center of main Campus
  • The Middlebury College Knoll Garden
How it works image

When lightning is in the area, it’s important to take shelter in a safe and weather-proof indoor location such as an enclosed building. Care should be taken to stay away from open windows, water, trees, fences, golf carts, mowers, elevated ground and power lines.

Please note, Middlebury College has enabled “silence times” enabled nighttime hours (10pm to 7am) and other hours when deemed appropriate. During these time frames, the alert will not activate when lightning is detected.

Timers

Once a lightning alert is activated, a 30-minute timer is displayed. If lightning is detected again during the 30-minute wait time, the timer automatically resets to 30-minutes. Individuals that may be outside when a timer is activated should take necessary safety precautions such as taking seeking shelter indoors.
