The media play a significant role in shaping our thinking about important political topics. How do we understand the patterns of media coverage when it comes to issues such as the war in Gaza or DEI? This talk explores the use of big data methods for understanding how the media portrays major political and policy discussions.

Firebrands of Anti-Modernity: Populist Elitism in the United States and the Russian Federation

Recent years have witnessed a growing affinity between radicalized right-wing movements in the United States and Russia, countries that have often viewed each other as intractable foes. This lecture will examine ethnonationalist movements and anti-globalist opinion-makers in both countries, with particular attention to justifications for the 2022 invasion of Ukraine and attitudes to Christian nationalism, LGBTQ+ identities, race, and performative identity.

A Beneficiary Showcase of Ukrainian Resilience through Art

This fourth annual event celebrates the culture and resilience of the nation of Ukraine with music, poetry, film, and more.  Featuring a parade of performances by the Middlebury College’s Ukrainian students, the Middlebury College Choir, and other special guests. Admission is free, and information about donating to Ukrainian relief organizations will be provided. After the show, the students will offer homemade traditional Ukrainian gingerbread cookies as a token of thanks for a donation.

From Growth to Glut: The Four Ds Shaping China’s Economy and Global Geopolitics

The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs program on Power, Wealth, and Global Political Economy presents “From Growth to Glut: The Four Ds Shaping China’s Economy and Global Geopolitics” by Zongyuan Zoe Liu.

This talk will present a framework - 4 Ds (debt, demand, demographics, and de-risking/de-coupling) - for understanding China’s economic challenges and their implications for the rest of the world. It will also explain the structural forces that have led to China’s recurring overcapacity challenge and how Chinese firms are coping with these challenges.
