Dancing Bridges: From Ancestral Steps to Contemporary Beats

Join us for an electrifying dance workshop that takes you on a rhythmic journey from Africa to the Americas. “Dancing Bridges: From Ancestral Steps to Contemporary Beats” explores the dynamic evolution of African dance, weaving together the storytelling ofYoruba Diasporic Dance, the expressive fluidity of Contemporary Dance, and the vibrant energy of Afro-Pop Dance.

Through improvisational structures and set phrase materials, participants will navigate what it means to dance together, discovering how seemingly “simple” frameworks can lead to complex and spontaneous dance-making. This class offers practical tools to enrich dancing as an ensemble and deepen understanding of one’s body in motion, in performance, and in community.

Join the Middlebury Dance Faculty for an Evening of Dance. Experience an inspiring night of movement and creativity as the Middlebury Dance Faculty come together to share their work. This special evening will feature a dynamic mix of performances, including a Newcomers Piece led by faculty member Kari Borni, showcasing individuals who have never performed in our department before. Witness new and original works, celebrate the power of movement, and connect with our vibrant dance community.

A rich taste of African culture that provides amazing, vigorous, high energy, and powerful movement. Let the beat of the drum move your body. Participants will learn songs, rhythms, dances, and culture as we embark on a journey of dances from the African diaspora.
Class is accompanied by live musicians to help participants understand the communication between the music and the dance.

Open to students, faculty, staff and community members age 13 and up!

No credit. Attend one or all classes!

Elizabeth Duran and Sanaa Wong will share work from their independent studies. Miguel Castillo’s ’18 Salsa Culture and Performance course will share a choreographic excerpt of materials learned in class.

Blending movement and monologue, Miguel pulls from a mix of choreographic and theatrical practices to explore what it means to connect, clash, and come together.

Think of it as a creative experiment—throwing some pasta at the wall to see what sticks. Join us for an evening of raw, unpolished material and a peek behind the curtain at how art comes to life.

Acclaimed poet Arisa White and choreographer Laurel Jenkins direct Willow’s Apothecary, featuring The Dance Company of Middlebury College with live electronic music by McLean Macionis and cello by Robin Lane.
