French pianist Cédric Tiberghien will host an informal conversation with students on the life of a touring chamber musician. Students interested in a career in music are encouraged to come ask questions about getting started in the professional music business, graduate schools, competitions, how to put a concert program together, collaborative performance, manager/agents, and more. Pamela Jordan of the Netherlands’ HEAD-Genuit-Foundation analyzes the Berlin Wall as a sonic infrastructural space. Propaganda broadcasts, guard dogs, gunfire, and sirens were violent, auditory markers along the barrier. The patent differences in the two sides’ soundscapes coerced silence on the East, actively demarcating a territory of surveillance and hostile control. Free

Roo Weed ’18.5 is a senior Physics major. As the Reiff Intern at the Middlebury College Museum of Art, she has designed and created a digital interface for displaying the collection of Greek and Roman coins in the Antiquities Gallery. Free

An illustrated lecture by Dr. Elizabeth Otto, executive director of the Humanities Institute and associate professor of modern and contemporary art history and visual studies at the University at Buffalo. She shares her research on the roles queer identities and gender fluidity played in the development of Modernism’s legendary art school. Free

As part of her Reiff Internship, Jill Stauffer, Architectural Studies ’19, will discuss her display of architectural images and related materials drawn from the permanent collection that are displayed at the museum’s balcony gallery. The talk will be followed by light refreshments and a visit to the museum to view the exhibition.

Music Professor Jeffrey Buettner moderates a panel of Su Tan’s former students turned music professionals. Featuring Pete Francis ’99, co-founder, Dispatch, Mary Montgomery Koppel ’04, composer; Christina Whitten Thomas ’01, composer; Alison Maggart ’08, Assistant Professor of Instruction in Musicology, The University of Texas at Austin; and Professor Tan. Shimenawa, or “enclosing ropes”, are used to construct sacred space in the worship of kami (Shinto gods). Shan Zeng ’19 will discuss the history of shimenawa in a short talk based on her thesis work. The talk will be followed by light refreshments and a visit to the Reiff Gallery of Asian Art to view the newly installed shimenawa there.

Come watch the heart-wrenching story of the activists of gay liberation in this tragic era. “How to Survive a Plague” is a 2012 American documentary film about the early years of the AIDS epidemic, and the efforts of activist groups ACT UP and TAG.
