The 2016 presidential race has showcased the biggest and most colorful cast of presidential candidates in recent memory, including Vermont’s own Bernie Sanders, Celebrity Apprentice impresario Donald Trump and neurosurgeon Ben Carson. On the eve of the Iowa caucus, Professor Matthew Dickinson will examine the state of the race. Who is most likely to win their party’s nomination, and why?

FMMC Assistant Professor David Miranda Hardy presents episode one of his recently released TV series, Bala Loca (Stray Bullet). The show finished airing in September in CHV, a Turner-owned Chilean network, to critical aclaim. Bala Loca centers on Mauro Murillo, a 50-year ¬old journalist with a past as an investigative reporter during the Chilean dictatorship. In the transition to democracy Murillo grew attracted to the glamour of entertainment television and found substantial fame and economic success.

UMOJA, the Middlebury African Students Organization, will be hosting its annual conference, AMKA. This year’s AMKA Conference will highlight Africa through Film. We hope to bring together a group of speakers that will expand and challenge our views of Africa through the critical lens of film. We will have screenings leading up to the conference as well as a full day of guest speakers.

Dawud Wharnsby is a Muslim-Canadian born poet and songwriter. His career as a musician includes fifteen solo albums, five poetry anthologies, numerous sound-track credits, and performances in some of the most prestigious theatres. He has also collaborated with world-renowned and world-celebrated artists, such as Yusuf Islam, Zain Bikha, Irshad Khan, Hadiqa Kiani, Danny Thompson, Stephen Fearing, and Danny McKhool. From 2009 onwards, the Royal Islamic Strategic Stduies Centre (Jordan) considers Dawud to be among the top 500 Most Influential Muslims in the world.

The film asks whether we can change our larger goals as a nation and learn from the rest of the world about the small truths that are the sources of human happiness. Can our dreams serve as a conduit for the developing world’s financial well-being? The film explores how working in small but meaningful ways, we can overcome obstacles to happiness – the isolation of suburban comfort as well as the despair of poverty – to create joy for ourselves and others.
