Please join us for four recent documentary films about Japanese society. Award-winning documentary CAMPAIGN depicts a heated election campaign in Kawasaki City, Japan, by following a candidate with no political experience on the campaign trail.

Come out and enjoy a double feature, starting with Monsters University: Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. “Monsters University” unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends. Second film will be Deadpool: A fast-talking mercenary with a morbid sense of humor is subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers and a quest for revenge.

Comics is finally coming of age as an artistic and literary form. Now this once-maligned medium of expression is poised for new opportunities, thanks to a mutating media environment and a potential revolution in visual education. Author and comics artist Scott McCloud shines a light on these and other fascinating trends in a fast-moving visual presentation.

Rakugo is a traditional Japanese art of storytelling, where performers sit in front of the audience and tell humorous, scary, or moving dramatic stories using vivid facial expressions and body language to convey different characters. At the yearly Rakugo performance, professional Rakugo players perform classic stories while a traditional paper-cutter cuts any student’s request into a paper masterpiece. Students from the Rakugo club perform as well, and outside guests are welcome (basic English subtitles are provided).
