A debate on the pros and cons of school choice. EDST 0115 Education in the USA

When 14-year-old Hirut is abducted in her rural village’s tradition of kidnapping women for marriage, she fights back, accidentally killing her captor and intended husband. Local law demands a death sentence for Hirut, but Meaza, a tough and passionate lawyer from a women’s legal aide practice, steps in to fight for her. With both Hirut’s life and the future of the practice at stake the two women must make their case for self-defense against one of Ethiopia’s oldest and most deeply-rooted traditions. Set in the untamed wilds of the Mbaracayú Reserve in rural Paraguay, this intimate verité documentary offers a rare glimpse of a disappearing world where timid girls grow into brave young women even as they are transformed by their unlikely friendships with one another. Free and open to the public. There will be a Q&A period afterwards led by faculty from the Education Studies Program.

This film examines the hidden assumption of cultural superiority behind education aid projects, which overtly aim to help children “escape” to a “better life” – despite mounting evidence of the environmental, social, and mental health costs of our own modern consumer lifestyles, from epidemic rates of childhood depression and substance abuse to pollution and climate change. Free and open to the public. There will be a Q&A period afterwards led by faculty from the Education Studies Program.

Inspired by Howard Zinn’s, Voices of a People’s History, students in EDST 0215 (Culturally Responsive Pedagogy) will present assorted readings and teachings that help expand the story of the United States. We will engage key questions regarding curricular and pedagogical choices by asking: Who is represented in the classroom? Why? Which voices are amplified, ignored, or absent? How do teachers navigate towards inclusive anti-racist pedagogy that is committed to culturally sustaining practice? Audience members will engage with one another in this interactive presentation.
