Checking in with yourself and understanding your needs is the first step in exploring self-care.

Taking care of yourself in college can be tricky! Students often feel overwhelmed with academic, social and community stressors, as well as pressure to succeed. Considering what you need to feel rested and restored emotionally is an important part of your well-being and your success as a student.

Making a Plan

We know when students make time to prioritize restorative habits their performance improves. Build time for self-care into your routine, whether you are a new or returning student:

  • Take a self-care assessment (see below).
  • Talk with someone who cares about you and can help you think of what helps.
  • Write down a list of things that you know restore your energy.
  • Meet with a health educator to learn more about building a self-care routine.

A key part of self-care which is often the first thing skipped when life gets overwhelming is spending fun and fulfilling time with others. Social connection helps us to protect against the risks of loneliness and isolation; both are big threats to emotional well-being.
