Frequently Asked Questions
Q May I arrive early or stay late?
Unfortunately we cannot accommodate early arrivals and late departures. Check in at Bread Loaf is 1PM or later on Monday and check out is 1PM on Wednesday. We suggest other local accommodations here.
Q Are bathrooms at the Bread Loaf Inn private?
No - they are shared.
Q When is the deadline to register?
May 18, 2020.
Q What is the cancelation policy?
We will provide a full refund, should you need to cancel your registration, until April 16, 2020. A 50% refund will be offered from April 17 to May 13, 2020. Please email your cancelation request to cxsullivan@middlebury.edu
Q Is there scholarship funding available?
Currently we offer scholarships only for Middlebury College Faculty and Staff. These scholarships include meals on program days but do not include lodging. They are first come first serve; returnees are waitlisted. If a College staff or faculty member wishes to stay overnight at Bread Loaf, this cost is not included in the scholarship and must be purchased separately.
Q Can you tell me more about the accommodations and meals?
Lodging will be on site at Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf Campus. Bread Loaf is in the Green Mountain National Forest - about 20 minutes away from the main Middlebury College Campus. Lodging will be in the recently renovated Inn as well as other historical buildings nearby. Here is a video that will help you visualize the environment. Here is more information about the history of Bread Loaf.
Meals are prepared by kitchen staff at the Inn and will be shared in a dining hall. Ingredients are locally sourced as much as possible. There will be two coffee/snack breaks during the day, one in the mid-morning and one in the mid-afternoon. There will also be cash bars in the evening after dinner. It is important that you fill out the survey after registering online in case you have any dietary restrictions so we can make note of your needs.
Q Do you example program from last year? And maybe an attendees list?
Programs from last year are available by request, to Charlotte Sullivan, program associate at cxsullivan@middlebury.edu. Schools and programs that have attended in the past include:
ALU, Ashoka U, Bowdoin College, Brown University, Champlain Valley High, College for Social Innovation, Connecticut State College, Fordham University, Gould Academy, Islamic Sciences and Ed University, Michigan State University, Northfield Mount Hermon, Notre Dame, NYU Stern School, Prescott College, Smith College, UC San Diego, University of New Hampshire, University of Rochester and community partners, Vanderbilt University, Wellesley College, Wheaton, Williams College.
Q I'm a geology teacher, K-12 educator, artist - is this conference for me?
Yes! We welcome a diverse range of participants and find our programming functions best when there are attendees from a wide array or sectors represented. One need not be a professor or staff person in higher education to attend.
Q What is the Ashoka U Social Innovation Writer's Retreat? Can I apply to it?
The 3rd Annual Social Innovation Summer Scholars’ Writing Retreat is a multi-day, lightly facilitated retreat designed to help you advance your research and writing goals alongside a community of peers with similar interests from across the globe. The Retreat is held in collaboration with Middlebury College and Ashoka U.
To participate, all interested individuals must submit a proposal about the writing project they hope to advance during the Retreat. Space is limited. The priority deadline is March 3, 2020, with a secondary deadline on March 30, 2020. All applicants will be notified of their status by April 6, 2020.
Travel
Bread Loaf campus is in the small town of Ripton in the heart of Central Vermont. Bread Loaf is a four-hour drive from Boston, five hours from NYC. If you plan to fly, it is ~one hour from Burlington, VT (the closest airport) and two hours from Albany, NY (the next closest). We recommend allowing at least 2- 2.5 hours of time between landing in Burlington and the start time of the retreat on Monday, June 1. Public ground transportation is limited between Breadloaf and airports, so renting a car is a convenient option for those wishing for flexible ground transit. Arranging a rideshare through Middlebury Transit is a good economical option for those that wish to carpool. More information will also be provided in registration confirmation and future correspondence with participants.
