Be Prepared
Know the Risks in your Area
The first step of preparedness is knowledge! There are many tools that assess the climate impact where you are, such as this US Climate Vulnerability Index. Explore these tools and note what risk-factors your area may have.
Familiarize Yourself with Tools and Resources
Vermont, although lower on the climate vulnerability index than many other places across the US and world, has still felt its share of climate impacts. Familiarizing yourself with tools and resources- here in Vermont, where you’re from, or wherever you end up- can help you to be prepared to jump straight into action.
Here on campus, our Public Safety team works hard to help provide you with the resources and warnings that you need to be prepared, from wildfires to lightning strikes and beyond.
For wildfire smoke: BiHall is equipped with Purple Air monitors that provide real-time air quality assessment and monitoring. To know when you should take extra air quality precautions (such as utilizing air purifiers or staying inside), explore the CDC webpage on safety guidelines surrounding wildfires and wildfire smoke.
For flooding: The State of Vermont has a FloodReady webpage specifically geared toward flood preparedness. Vermont 211 and United Way have also compiled a list of resources and volunteer opportunities.
Create Bonds
Calls for building community are important in so many more ways than one! Creating bonds can help you and your community be prepared for and respond to disaster events and ensure that no one is left behind. Here on campus, tap into your networks and bring folks into your circles.
