A NOTE FROM YOUR SOCIAL CHAIRS
Congratulations to the Yearbook Committee! When you read it, you discovered that although we graduated 50 years ago, we are not old. We may have lost a bit off our fast ball but we are very active. We generally have stopped drawing a salary but our liberal arts education is now paying off as we explore new interests, develop previously unused talents, and devote hours volunteering for our favorite causes. If you have been uncertain about coming back, this yearbook should have resolved all doubts. The next information you receive will be the registration packet. Return to Middlebury in June and reconnect with your classmates. We’ll be waiting for you. ’58-still great!
WHAT’S ON THE SCHEDULE?
Far more than anyone can do – but nothing is compulsory and you have unlimited cuts!
The College plans a full schedule for all returning alums and there will be times when you will have to choose between those offerings and the activities just for our class – sorry but that’s the way it is. Here’s the tentative line-up of ’58 events:
Thursday, June 5
Arrive and check in any time after 2:30 at Forest East Lounge. The first event will be dinner for our class at the president’s house that evening. This will give us a chance to meet Ron and Jessica Liebowitz. An orientation/overview of the weekend will follow and we will get to meet our student hosts. Transportation from Forest Hall will be provided.
Friday, June 6
In the morning, there will be a Perspective Program with current students, faculty and staff – a great chance for those who have not been back for some time to learn about Middlebury today.
After a short break, there will be a presentation and discussion led by Ann Cutis Odom’s husband, Bill Odom, senior fellow at Hudson Institute and professor at Yale.
Off to a class lunch, thankfully followed by class athletic events and/or free time.
This evening is the Class of ’58 dinner – dress up a little for this if you desire.
“Open Mike” evening, emceed by Joe Mohbat, and an old fashioned Sing-Along” led by Carolyn Skyllberg Peterson. Let’s see how many of those college-songs we still remember!
Saturday, June 7
Alan Bond, with help from Carol Hardy Hawthorne, will lead a Memorial Service for our deceased classmates in Mead Chapel.
After lunch, “Love Letters” will be performed by Ginny Davis Irwin and Pete Honegger.
This will be followed by a book-signing for any of our “published” classmates.
The Convocation (That’s when we get our standing ovation!) is scheduled for 4:30.
Dinner will be served for all the classes in the evening.
Sunday, June 8
Chapel Service with the alumni choir and the seven-fold amen.
Farewell brunch at Kirk Alumni Center located on the golf course.
What to pack:
Even though you may check the weather forecast before you come, Vermont is notoriously unpredictable. Pack a sweater and, if possible, a raincoat. The key word for the weekend is comfort. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a sweater or jacket for mornings and evenings and please dress casually. The only time you may want to dress up a bit is for the class dinner on Friday night. Dinner at the president’s house on Thursday night is in a tent and there is no need to dress up. You’ll be walking on grass for part of the time so you may want to opt in favor of flat shoes or very low heels. Coats and ties for the men are entirely optional.
Bring your canes!
Reunion Memories: As a sign that we have moved into the 21st century, our reunion memories will be captured on a DVD. We have identified a student film major who will do the filming during the weekend. He will be using music from “our era.” If you have any suggestions (Moonlight in Vermont?) please get them to Carol Hardy Hawthorne at chawth@aol.com or Hugh Spitzer at env.network.hspitzer@erols.com. The DVD will be mailed, at no charge, to reunion attendees. There will be a $20 charge for non-attendees wishing to have a copy.
Missing Classmates: Did your biography page arrive too late for the book, or not at all? Did you eagerly look for a classmate who wasn’t there? You have a second chance. Take up your pencil and write. Call that missing classmate and urge them to do the same. Send it to Sue Levine by email at slevine@middlebury.edu or by post at 422 Main Street, Middlebury, VT. 05753. All pages received will be included in the post-reunion mailing.
Memorial Service:
Please look in the back of our 50th Reunion Yearbook for the list of our deceased classmates. If you have any special rememberances please jot down a sentence or two and send them in to Carol Hardy Hawthorne at chawth@aol.com or Alan Bond at clerehurst@aol.com. You can also mail them to Carol at 420 F W Hartford Drive, Portmouth, NH 03801.
Alumni Choir:
Classmates and spouses/partners/guests are encouraged to sing with the choir on Sunday morning. Emory Fanning will conduct two rehearsals which will not conflict with our other activities. Remember-no experience is necessary and all are welcome!
Class of ’58 Displays:
We will have display space in Forest for Middlebury memorabilia. We also encourage authors, painters, sculptors, weavers, and volunteers to bring something to show us what you are doing with your days.
See you in June!
