Class of 1974 (50th) Reflections on Sustainability: A Tour through Middlebury’s Past, Present, and Future

A lot has changed on the campus since 1974! Join Jack Byrne, dean of sustainability and environmental affairs, and Mike Moser, director of facilities, for a “sustainability in action” walking tour, featuring projects that have helped Middlebury meet its Energy2028 and carbon neutrality goals. The tour will include examples of how the College is using local, renewable sources and reducing energy usage, the role of land conservation, and what lies ahead. The tour will also reveal some of the invisible campus infrastructure that plays a significant role in these efforts.

Join Tim Parsons, the landscape horticulturist at Middlebury, for a short walk in the landscape. He will talk about the trees, shrubs, and flowers on the grounds and explain how the College manages the landscape and prepares for the future in a changing world.

In this era of political tension, when civic culture is fractured and when the value of the liberal arts is questioned, a message from 1963 has particular resonance. As a class, we will watch a documentary on the last speech that JFK gave, and hear from the executive producer, Neil Bicknell, followed by a discussion with Professor Jay Parini, who was interviewed for his Robert Frost knowledge.

Middlebury’s response to the climate crisis has taken many forms over the past several decades with significant involvement by students—both in advocating for setting bold and ambitious goals and in rolling up their sleeves to work on implementation. Join Jack Byrne, dean of sustainability and environmental affairs; Minna Brown, director of the Climate Action Program; and Tara Federoff, sustainability specialist, to learn how Middlebury is preparing students to take on the challenges. Reunion Parade

One of the highlights of the weekend! Classes march in reverse order, beginning with the Class of 2019. Members of the Classes of 1949 through 2019 should gather by 4:10 p.m. at the bottom of the hill, next to their student-held banners. For those who cannot or do not want to walk in the parade, please join your class at the chapel steps.

Celebrate the class award winners, enjoy class remarks from alumni, hear an update from President Patton, and tap your canes in song! Attend, listen via speaker on the lawn outside of the chapel, or watch online.
