Home to rare books and manuscripts from a 4,000-year-old cuneiform tablet to contemporary artists’ books, Special Collections serves as a research laboratory for the history of the book and material culture; in addition to collecting and preserving the history of the College, as custodians for Middlebury College’s history and the Middlebury College Archives. Dialogue: Middlebury Sustainability in Action Through the Years
Middlebury’s response to the climate crisis has taken many forms over the past several decades with significant involvement by students—both in advocating for setting bold and ambitious goals and in rolling up their sleeves to work on implementation. Join Jack Byrne, dean of sustainability and environmental affairs; Minna Brown, director of the Climate Action Capacity Project; and Tara Federoff, sustainability specialist, to learn how Middlebury is preparing students to take on the challenges. Using Energy2028 as a focus, will share stories about how students, faculty, and staff are contributing to meeting those goals.

New England Review is pleased to present a reading with alumni and faculty authors during Middlebury’s Reunion Weekend. Reading this year will be Spring Ulmer, a visiting assistant professor of English, along with range of accomplished alumni, including Hugh Coyle ’83, Maria Padian ’83, Lewis Robinson ’93, Gretchen Schrafft ’08, and others. Lacrosse the Ages
Please join Missy Foote, Kate Perine Livesay ’03, Hugh Marlow ’57, and Erin Quinn ’86 for coed pickup lacrosse at Alumni Stadium. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Depending on how many participate, our goal is to divide up into teams and use the new Sixes format. Sixes is the World Lacrosse format proposed for the 2028 Summer Olympics. Sixes, by design, is different from the traditional 11-on-11 field game. Everything is smaller (except for the size of the goals), including the field (there’s only 50 yards between the nets), rosters (12 players). It’s essentially basketball with sticks! Bring your gear and play the game of the future: the fastest game on two feet!

One of the highlights of the weekend! Classes march in reverse order, beginning with the Class of 2018. Members of the Classes of 1948–2018 should gather by 4:10 PM at the bottom of the hill, next to their student-held banners. For those who cannot or do not want to walk in the parade, please join your class at the Middlebury Chapel steps.

Glenn Andres, professor emeritus of the history of art and architecture, will present an illustrated talk focusing on the history and ongoing principles that have made Middlebury a place dear to students and alumni and have shaped one of America’s most beautiful campuses.

1973: Reflections on Sustainability Walking Tour
A Tour through Middlebury’s Past, Present, and Future
Join Jack Byrne, dean of sustainability and environmental affairs, and Mike Moser, director of facilities, for a “climate crisis response” walking tour of the campus, which will feature some key projects that have helped Middlebury meet its Energy2028 and carbon neutrality goals. Learn about energy use and carbon emissions, how the College is using more renewable sources and reducing energy usage, the role of land conservation, and what lies ahead. The tour will also highlight some of the invisible campus infrastructure that plays a significant role in these efforts.

One of the issues our class faced during college was concern for the environment, exemplified by the first Earth Day in April 1970. Classmates have participated in environmental causes in various ways that we will explore, including governmental policies, corporate regulation, and grassroots activism.

1963 & 1958: Robert Frost Interpretive Trail Walk
Join classmates for a walk on Ripton’s Robert Frost Interpretive Trail. The 0.3-mile loop nearest the parking lot is on a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk with several benches; there will be an option to extend the walk onto easy dirt trails for a combined total of 1.2 miles. This National Recreation Trail features several Frost poems mounted along the way. It passes across the South Branch of the Middlebury River and through scenic wetlands, forests, and fields.
Don’t forget to dress for the weather (often 10 degrees cooler than campus) and bring a water bottle! If time allows, we will drive through the Bread Loaf campus before returning.

Take a bus tour (on Friday or Saturday) to see some of the newest additions to campus and changes in town while revisiting some familiar spots along the way. Space is limited. Please sign up for tours in Hepburn Lounge and meet at the end of Hepburn Road, near Stewart, five minutes before your selected time.
Tours depart at 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM, will last approximately 45 minutes, and will return to the end of Hepburn Road.

1973: Political Life Now and Then
One of the issues that overrode our years in college was politics, primarily in relation to the Vietnam War. We have asked classmates who were politically active during college and/or in the years since college to share their experiences. We hope they will reflect on how their college years may have influenced their later pursuits, or whether they “fell into” a political life. We’re not interested in discussing specific political issues, except perhaps as they informed the lives/careers of the participants. Jim Morone, professor of political science and public policy at Brown, will moderate.

Take a bus tour to see some of the newest additions to campus and changes in town while revisiting some familiar spots along the way. Space is limited. Please sign up for tours in Hepburn Lounge, and meet at the end of Hepburn Road, near Stewart, five minutes before your selected time. Tours depart at 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM, will last approximately 45 minutes, and will return to the end of Hepburn Road.
