Mental Health Training

Health and Wellness Education offers a variety of trainings for students, staff and faculty about supporting those in our community facing challenges to their mental health. 

Peer Support Skills Training

Audience: Students

4-week, 75 minute, training for students interested in becoming better supporters and listeners to others in their community. Students will engage in discussion about challenges facing students and practice deep listening skills important in connecting with others when they are in distress. 

Students who successfully complete this training will receive a certificate acknowledging their completion. This is a wonderful training for students interested in becoming student leaders, joining helping professions, or just interested in brushing up on their listening skills. 

Offered as a J-term workshop and as requested by students. 

Suicide Prevention Training

Audience: Students, Staff & Faculty

3-hour workshop which guides participants through the process of understanding crises, how to support and engage with those who might be considering suicide and being effective in linking people to campus and community support. Participants who complete this workshop will receive a certificate acknowledging their completion. 

Offered intermittently throughout the year as an open training and as a requested by campus groups. 

Supporting Students through Challenges 

Audience: Staff & Faculty

4-week, 75 minute, workshop series for staff and faculty will help participants support students struggling with mental health challenges.

Workshop participants will be trained in: 

  • recognizing and describing mental health concerns
  • responding to students empathically
  • making effective referrals to support services as needed

In each session, participants will learn material and then apply their learning to real-life situations through discussion and practice. No previous training in mental health is required to attend.

Helping Students in Distress

Audience: Staff & Faculty

1.5 hour training for staff and faculty offered during a staff or department meeting time to learn how to recognize and effectively support students in distress. 

Offered at request of campus departments or offices.
