Each year Middlebury students and alumni receive nationally competitive fellowships and scholarships for research opportunities, graduate study and independent projects. Caitlyn Myers (Economics) and Sarah Stroup (Political Science) received the first Marlow Above and Beyond Award in May for the Faculty at Home series. The Middlebury Alumni Association award is in recognition of their effort to launch the series in April 2020, as the pandemic began, and its reach to more than 7,500 attendees including students, alumni, parents, and friends of Middlebury. The Registrar announced students will be able to register for half-credit courses this fall that run for the entire semester but meet only one day per week, any exceptions to this meeting pattern will be noted in the description. Half-credit courses are labeled in Banner 9, the searchable course catalog, and on the course schedule under the instruction mode. Middlebury College is again a Fulbright U.S. Students and Fulbright U.S. Scholars Top Producer for 2021-2022. Each year the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) announces the top producing institutions for the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. Writing and Rhetoric Program professor Hector Vila describes tools he uses to manage integrating students on Zoom into his classroom environment. From using his syllabus to assistance from students in class, he creates an inclusive experience for all participants. Read more
In her presentations for the Contemporary Teaching Series in January, Alex Shevrin Venet outlined four key priorities to trauma-informed educational practices—predictability, flexibility, empowerment, and connection. While acknowledging there is creative tension between these four proactive priorities, and no simple formula for turning them into practice, she shared ways to approach them in the classroom.
