In Memoriam

President Laurie L. Patton and Dean of Spiritual and Religious Life Mark Orten sent the following message to the campus community on November 16.

Dear Middlebury Community,

We are writing to share information about an upcoming memorial service and celebration of life for Ivan Valerio, a member of the Class of 2026, who died on November 7.

We have been working with many who would like to participate and have scheduled the service for Monday, December 4, at 5 p.m. in Middlebury Chapel. We wanted to let you know the date and time before the upcoming break so that those who would like to attend can plan ahead.

Many of us have already found smaller, more intimate ways to remember Ivan, to process our grief and to express care: In the classroom, in the residence hall where Ivan lived, and at other gatherings around campus. As we return from break we invite all who wish to join in this service to be together as we remember and celebrate Ivan’s life among us.

Those who wish to play an active role in planning the service of remembrance are encouraged to contact Mark Orten, dean of spiritual and religious life at the Scott Center.

As a reminder, our Center for Health and Wellness staff, TimelyCare, and chaplains at the Scott Center are ready to provide support for any student. The Employee and Family Assistance Program, 866-660-9533 (company code: Middlebury College), is available 24/7 for faculty and staff and their immediate family members, and those residing in their homes.

We look forward to gathering in a spirit of reflection, healing, and celebration.

In community,

Laurie L. Patton
