Film Screening: Fences
Attend a screening of the acclaimed 2016 film starring Denzel Washington (Oscar nominee for this role) and Viola Davis (Oscar winner for this role). Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play takes a passionate look at former baseball player Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) as he fights to provide for those he loves in a world that threatens to push him down. Denzel Washington also directed the film.

A Screening of Three Short Films by Taiwan Poet and Filmmaker Ye Mimi.
Poet Ye Mimi has been called “among the most innovative poets and filmmakers to have emerged in Taiwan in the twenty-first century.” She will screen three of her short films (40 minutes total): “They Are There But I Am Not,” made while Ms. Ye was at the Art Institute of Chicago; “Hail the Bodhisattva of Collected Junk,” a collaboration with Taiwanese singer Ro Sirong; and “Cease Susurrating,” which is dedicated to Ms. Ye’s late husband and is an abstracted depiction of funerals in Indonesia.
