  • How Equality Helped Italy Fight Corruption

    The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs Program in Global Political Economy presents “How Equality Helped Italy Fight Corruption” with Lucia Manzi, SUNY Plattsburgh. Organized by Gary WInslett, Assistant Professor of Political Science.

    In 1992, the “Clean Hands” anti-corruption operation resulted in hundreds of convictions and permanently changed the Italian political landscape. How was this breakthrough possible? Prof. Manzi shows how egalitarian changes in prosecutorial institutions helped the Italian government more effectively fight the Mafia as well as terrorist organizations.

  • What is Town Meeting Day? Talking Democracy

    Elections are a critical aspect of representative government, but self-government requires engagement more than once every few years. In this 2024 election year, this event will get us started talking about democracy by focusing on Vermont’s Town Meeting Day. Vermont’s small size and institutions provide a hopeful model for reinvigorating democracy.

    Professor Bert Johnson will offer a brief history and overview of Town Meeting Day in Vermont, Attendees will then join small group discussions about local government and a Q&A session. Refreshments will be served!

  • Deviant and Defiant Love: Paths to Fulfillment with Multidisciplinary Artist SOL

    SOL will discuss the ways that rebels, freaks, and outcasts have been the catalyzers of major social and cultural transformations. Participants will reflect on nature as a diagram for cultivating self-love and receive tools for overcoming insecurity in pursuit of their greatest potential.
