Global Food Security in 2022: How the Invasion of Ukraine Has Exacerbated a Looming Food Price Crisis

The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs program on Power, Wealth and Global Political Economy presents Dr. David Laborde of the International Food Policy Research Institute, who will examine the different drivers that have contributed to create a global food price crisis in 2022. In particular, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused turmoil in three highly interconnected markets – food, fuel, and fertilizer – leading to serious food security concerns globally. Dr. Laborde will discuss various policy responses considered by policy makers in 2022 and propose potential scenarios for 2023.

Please join us for a reading from Professor Saldarriaga’s new book Infected Empires: Decolonizing Zombies, which examines a central figure in contemporary apocalyptic film: the zombie. This creature reveals bloody truths about the human condition, the wounds of history, and methods of contending with them. Studying films from a transnational perspective, Infected Empires presents a vision of a global zombie that resists oppressive structures that racialize, marginalize, disable, and dispose of bodies.

    Rhinoceros

The Theatre Department presents Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco, adaptation by Martin Mooney, directed by Jay Dunn.

The citizens of an anywhere small-town-USA gradually turn into rhinoceroses until they have become a faceless and savage herd. All of them that is, except for Bérenger, who refuses to relinquish his humanity. In this dark comic vision of civilization run amok, Ionesco depicts the struggle of the individual to maintain integrity and dignity alone in a world where all others have succumbed to the thrill of brute force and the mindlessness of the mob.
